When to Replace Truck Suspension Airbags

Don't wait until the airbag has completely burst before replacing it. The following conditions indicate that your truck's suspension airbags have failed or are about to fail and require immediate replacement:

Deep Cracks on the Rubber Surface: Slight surface cracks are normal aging in older airbags. However, when cracks penetrate the rubber surface and expose the inner cord layer, the airbag's sealing structure has been compromised. Continued use will cause the cracks to widen rapidly, eventually leading to sudden bursting while driving.
Bulges on the Side of the Airbag: Bulges indicate that the airbag's rubber layer and cord layer have separated. This is usually caused by prolonged overloading, excessive folding due to insufficient air pressure, or manufacturing defects. The airbag wall at the bulge area is thinner and may burst at any time.
Severe Rusting or Swelling of Metal Endplates: If the metal endplates at both ends of the airbag show extensive rust, coating peeling, or noticeable swelling and thickening at the edges, it indicates that corrosion has affected structural strength. Severely rusted endplates may suddenly burst open during suspension compression.
Airbag Fails to Maintain Height After Vehicle Stops: Park the vehicle on a level surface, inflate the airbag to its normal operating height, and then turn off the air supply. If the chassis height drops significantly by more than half an inch within an hour, or one side is significantly lower than the other, it indicates a slow leak in the airbag.
Noticeable Low or Tilted Side While Driving: Observing from the rear of the vehicle, if the clearance between one axle and the chassis is significantly smaller than the other, or if the vehicle tilts to one side, it indicates that the airbag on that side has lost its support capability.
Abnormal Bouncing in the Cab or Cargo Box: If the previously smooth airbag suspension becomes stiff and bumpy, or if there is noticeable secondary bouncing when driving over uneven surfaces, it indicates that the airbag's stiffness characteristics have changed.

Regular Maintenance Recommendations

Check the airbags every time you change the oil. Use a lift or jack to completely suspend the axle, allowing the airbag to freely extend. Check the sides of the airbag for cuts, scratches, or puncture marks from foreign objects. Also check the exhaust pipe, fender brackets, and frame beams around the airbag for sharp edges that could interfere with or rub against it.

Replacement Best Practices

Even if the airbags on opposite sides of the same axle are intact, it is recommended to replace them as a pair. If one airbag needs replacement due to damage, the other airbag, even if it appears usable, should also be replaced at the same time. This ensures consistent suspension performance on both sides and avoids vehicle pulling, uneven tire wear, or body swaying during braking.
